Synopsis
This study extends and develops the emerging debate about Australasian women's contribution to world cinema. The Australasian film industry has been aided by positive government policies and financial support, which has enabled women directors to enter the industry. This text outlines the effect of this initiative and analyzes the links between the short film, avant garde and mainstream, tracing how early links are reworked. This study examines the major preoccupations evident in these women directors' work, such as the representation of landscape; the position of women in colonial society; the dysfunctional or "deviant" family; culture and ethnicity; power and sexuality; desire, deviance and camp. The directors whose work is discussed include Gillian Armstrong, Jane Campion, Clara Law, Alison MacLean, Merata Mita, Tracy Moffat, Monica Pellizzari, Gaylene Preston and Melanie Read.
