I used to dislike cats. Stuck-up, self absorbed creatures, I thought. Then one moved in on us - 'chose us as his servants' as the saying goes. By the time I read Spoken Cat I'd had the time to observe the way cats operate and the book is full of real insights into cat behaviour.

The straight-faced cat grammar is fun, though most cats I know just turn their back when you try it out on them. Perhaps I didn't pay enough attention to the note on 'Practical exercises with a native speaker'.

But I laughed myself silly over the spoof cat folklore. Did you know that according to Cat legend, Cats arrived on earth many thousands of years ago from the star Canopus (perhaps that should be a double 's')?

The there's the masterly essay called Einstein's Cat: 'A brief overview of the evidence for the influence of cats on human intellectual and social development from the ealiest historical times to the present.' There is undoubtedly a Pallava sculpture with feline figures at Mahabalipuram in India (there's a photo to prove it), but does it really confirm the text of an ancient cuneiform tablet which, according to Miss Dora Chartreuse, a 19th century amateur Assyriologist, reads 'The heaven is fallen/The earth is fallen/I am the Cat who holds up the world'?
I decided to reserve judgement after finding the following entry in the biblography: de Gata, Vasco, Cataclysmerica, Beanbrane Press, Los Angeles, 1996.
