Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Far Horizons is the science fiction equivalent of Robert Silverberg's best-selling fantasy anthology Legends. In both books Silverberg invited some of the most renowned authors in the field to write a new story based on their most popular series or setting. For instance, the first story in Far Horizons is Ursula K. Le Guin's "Old Music and the Slave Women," which takes place in the same Hainish universe as her famous novels The Left Hand of Darkness and The Dispossessed. Dan Simmons has written a piece set in the world of Hyperion, Anne McCaffrey has turned in a Helva story from the world of The Ship Who Sang, and so on. Like Legends, the list of writers in Far Horizons reads like a Who's Who of the genre: Le Guin, Joe Haldeman, Orson Scott Card, David Brin, Simmons, Nancy Kress, Frederik Pohl, Gregory Benford, McCaffrey and Greg Bear, as well as Silverberg himself. And like Legends, each author takes a page or two to introduce their story, so that newcomers won't be totally lost. The average story in Far Horizons is, as you might expect, a significant cut above the average SF story, although this anthology is not quite as successful as its predecessor. Authors like Le Guin and Simmons have come up with some first-rate stuff, but Card and McCaffrey have produced stories that can best be described as mediocre. Overall, though, the book has far more ups than downs, and serious readers won't want to miss this one. Those new to the world of SF will also find Far Horizons an invaluable reference when they're looking for good authors to read. --Craig E. Engler, Amazon.com --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars an excellent taster of the exotic, 27 Jun 2009
This review is from: Far Horizons (Hardcover)
Eleven longish short stories by SF greats set in their popular milieu. I was already familiar with just under half the settings, and found it a mixed bag but well worth the read, and an excellent introduction to some of science fiction's most fabulously imagined worlds.

I feel i should rate the stories individually, so here goes.

"Old Music and the Slave Women" Ursula le Guin
5 stars. le Guin is awesome, as always.

"A Separate War" Joe Haldeman
3.5 Stars. An interesting insert into a gap in the Forever War

"Investment Counselor" Orson Scott Card
4 stars. A fascinating account of Ender's first meeting with Jane

"Temptation" David Brin
3.5 stars. An interesting intro to the Uplift Universe, intrigues me to find out more.

"Getting to Know the Dragon" Robert Silverberg
2 stars. Well researched but rather flat counter history, not up to Silverberg's best

"Orphans of the Helix" Dan Simmons
3.5 stars. Well written and intriguing view into a vaster universe

"Sleeping Dogs" Nancy Kress
4.5 stars. Superb dark cyberpunk, gritty and well observed. I really must read Kress' stuff.

"The Boy Who Would Live Forever" Frederik Pohl
3.5 stars. Charming, if rather old-fashioned tale from one of the true masters.

"A Hunger for the Infinite" Greg Benford
4 stars. Darkly twisted, disturbing and yet philosophically thoughtful take on the differences between organic and machine consciousness.

"The Ship Who Sang" Anne McCaffrey
2 stars. While I love the Pern books, her 'Ship' series read to me like SF Mills and Boon.

"The Way of All Ghosts" Greg Bear
4 stars. Hardcore SF, Bear asks questions about the nature of reality, the forces that govern it and where our free will sits amid the eddies.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent short story collection featuring top SF Authors, 3 Feb 2000

This review is from: Far Horizons (Paperback)
A collection of 11 stories in which top authors (Haldeman, Le Guin, Silverberg et al) return to previously created 'worlds'. The collection covers a pretty broad range of SF styles and all of the stories are enjoyable on one level or another(even Anne McCaffreys The Ship That Returned is readable). The highlight for me was Joe Haldemans 'addendum' to The Forever War (A Separate War) which captured the style and sense of the original book while telling a new an interesting story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A well balanced mix of good stories, 5 Jul 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Far Horizons (Hardcover)
This book seems to be the scifi mirror of the Legends book edited by Robert Silverberg. Once again a great collection of scifi talent has been brought together to create a great balance of different stories from a wide-band of scifi. Not for the inexperienced reader, it gives fans of the authors new material on favourite series. Personnaly I loved the new Simmons story on the Hyperion Cantos, and the Orson Scott Card story for Ender. A bit hefty at the current price so maybe some should wait for the paperback, it's still a great read if you're a hard-core fan.
