5.0 out of 5 stars A quite amazing story of the unknown, 27 Sep 2001
By A Customer
Most of the story Fade Out is believable - the whole business of aliens landing on Earth has been foretold time and again of course - but don't judge this book like that - believe me, you want to read right through to the end and then see if you can believe what goes on! Tilley writes very well in this book and his research into the geography and authorities involved is unflawed. I won't quote the last word - it'll give the whole book away!

4.0 out of 5 stars A stunning tale of contact with a spacecraft and more., 2 Jan 2001
I bought this book in the 1970's and I still have it and read it occasionally. It has obvious connections with the Robinson Crusoe story but transformed into a contemporary technological setting at the height of the Cold War. At times a little slow it nevertheless builds into gripping tension then jaw dropping amazement as the world as we know it grinds to a halt and we are invited to find the answers to life and existence through the doorway of a spacecraft. Did it come from another planet or from our own future? Read this thought provoking and entertaining thriller and make up your own mind. May I ask Mr Tilley if he ever wrote a screenplay of this novel as with judicious editing this could be another "2001" or "Contact."

3.0 out of 5 stars Proof reading pedants should avoid this edition..., 21 Oct 2003

I've only read one third so far but am already annoyed by the anachronisms thrown up by the "revisions" made for this edition. For example, when written the book obviously dealt with a President who fought in the Pacific theatre during WWII. In order to fit in with a 20+ year move of timeline the introduction to the President's military background states that he finished his aviation training just as the Vietnam War ended. A couple of paragraphs later he is said to have fought in the Pacific, then in a later chapter he is described as having flown missions against Japan from one of the Pacific Islands. Still it's fun in a sort of sub-Clancy time filling way.

4.0 out of 5 stars Engrossing-- at times it bogged down-- still I wanted more!
Found this book in a collection of hand me downs I received. Printed in1975 I at first put it aside as it was rather battered and unappealing andsci-fi is not my usual reading... Read more
