4.0 out of 5 stars A good bedtime read, 7 Jan 2007
By Midsummer Night (Muswell Hill, London) - See all my reviews
This was light enough to enable me to read a chapter a night and put it down afterwards (except towards the end), particularly during a rather boozy Christmas holiday.

The story starts with the concept that magic can only create illusions, though in the past it could do more, and is practiced as high art in the way that classical music is here and now. It runs in parallel with English history in the early 20th century - the two World Wars and The Troubles - and at an unspecified era two generations later. It is set in London, Surrey, Ireland and Scotland.

The story was enough to keep you intrigued as to the lives of the characters, one the King's Magister and the other a student, with enough plot twists to keep me guessing to almost the end (would he find May, and who was she). However the description, in places, lacked the imagery that the locations could have inspired - leaving a feeling of "I should be seeing what he is seeing" unsatisfied, and this is the part that requires some further polishing.

Anyone coming to England (or Ireland) from abroad, might like to read this to give a twist to a trip. Even at "train" rather than "rocket", it sets the imagination going.

3.0 out of 5 stars good but lacks cohesion, 24 Feb 2001
By A Customer
The central theory in this book, that magic should be more than just art and illusion, is a bit of a problem for most fantasy readers- it seems a foregone conclusion. While the authors use words like 'magery' and 'cantation' and 'origination' for various sub branches of magic, they stick with magic for the overall name, and that I think makes it more difficult to get into the spirit of things. The central characters journey is well written and interesting, with the past and present interweaving (something I like in books). The trouble is that every subsequent 'revelation' leaves you with a feeling of 'well, yes, of course'. Bit of a let down. Also, the ending is somehow a bit unsatisfying. It doesnt seem to me to be quite the ending the plot was driving towards. Overall I found it enjoyable, but if it were me writing it I wouldn't think it was quite ready to be published.
