4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Beginning Book, 20 Mar 2004
This book with the CD is a very nice beginning tutorial. Writing as a percussionist, I note that one needs not only basic exercises, but some music to play. I have seen other tutorial that do not do this but recommend you play along with CDs of professionals!

Long provides both the exercises and music to apply the exercises. His CD is helpful because each example runs about a minute or more which gives you the chance to play along. Other tutorials have the author basically repeat what he wrote. Long does not waste your time with this. If you are interested in learning the bodhran and using his book, defintely get the cassette or CD with it.

The one draw back I notice is he really does not explain how to play "triplets." Furthermore, his brief mention requires playing a triplet on the upstroke--far harder to do than on the down stroke. Another drawback is his decripion of holding the "stick." It is very hard to describe this in any book, so the reader should, if possible, at least be shown the basics.

At the end he gives nine tunes to play along with. These are fun and challenging and give the student some idea of "what" to do.

Obviously, learning an instrument requires a teacher. I imagine readers "across the pond" have a better access to teachers than us here. For those of us who find teachers of Irish music hard to find, this is a good beginning book.
