5.0 out of 5 stars Fairy Tales?, 31 Oct 2008
This book is full of 'fairy tales', which are great, but one word of warning - proof read each story first before reading it to your little ones, as some of them are quite gruesome and scary!!! (grandmother asleep in bed killed with an axe, man tied up in a bag filled with stones and dropped into a river, etc. etc...). I'd still highly reccomend it though.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love them as a teenager, wouldn't have been so sure 10 years ago!, 10 Nov 2009

I bought the book as I thought it would be fascinating to read fairy tales from the perspective of a 17 year old, rather than as a child, and although I did really enjoy the book, I honestly do think the stories are terrifying for children! I'm pretty sure the fairy stories I enjoyed when I was little were fairly heavily edited...

I can't recommend this book highly enough beyond that, it may seem an odd thing to read but honestly, the style in which fairy stories is written is almost haunting in its simplicity and economy. And the contrast between nostalgia and vague horror - fairy stories are actually fairly gothic in content - is unbelievably powerful.

Enjoy :).

5.0 out of 5 stars Fairytales Review, 20 Oct 2009
Exactly what it says on the lable.

A series of fairytales in their original form, translated into English. They're a bunch of brilliant short stories that will stay with you long after you've read them, but a word of warning - they might prove a little too much for someone of a younger age. There's lots of talk of murders etc.

This is a book I'd reccomend to everyone
