Product Description

Product Description

A useful guide for anyone who wants to make copywriting a business - either as a part-time or full-time career. For practising copywriters, find out how to build and extend your business into related areas.

From the Author

Don't be fooled by the title: although this book is specifically aimed at those who want to make a living from copywriting, it is written to appeal to anyone in the business of writing, from budding advertising creatives to experienced PR practitioners. I have tried to cover as much about the topic as possible - to make this the only book you need buy if you are setting out to ply your trade as a copywriter. Writing is only one part of the equation; I've also included information on dealing with clients, colleagues, suppliers and other contacts, plus how to set up on your own and what your options are once you're established. This book came about because of the number of people in the past who have asked me for advice. I figured there must be many more out there wondering whether it would be possible to make a living from writing. It's worked for me - and with this book, hopefully it will work for you, too.

3.0 out of 5 stars A book of two halves, 14 Oct 2003
By A Customer
At first glance, this book is great value because it is 2 books in one. The first half of the book deals with the business of copywriting - setting yourself up as a copywriter etc. The second half of the book deals with the art of copywriting - how to write good sales copy for ads, brochures etc.

The 2nd half is very detailed, and I found it very useful and relevant across a number of areas. I especially liked the chapter on writing for the web, which is relevant for today's market.

The 1st half is much less detailed. Given that this is the half of the book which should justify the 'Malking Money..' part of the title, this was disappointing.

To be fair to the author, most British copywriters running training courses/writing how-to books are fairly short on the detail of how money is to be made in copywriting.

I would use this book as a general introduction to the art and business of copywriting. Those serious about making money from copywriting should go on to read Bowerman's 'Well Fed Writer', the best book I have come across in this field (even though it's written for the USA market).

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent all-rounder, 27 Nov 2003
By A Customer
This is a detailed and well-presented work that deals comprehensively with all aspects of copy-writing and running a small business. I found the chapters on style and common lexical and grammatical pit-falls particularly interesting, whilst Deign's tips on how to structure your business and organise yourself as a free-lancer were, in my opinion, incredibly useful and reader-friendly. There is a refreshing levity and accessibility to his style that prevents his book from becoming overly didactic or stuffily text bookish. An excellent all-rounder and an note of encouragement to all those thinking of breaking into the daunting world of free-lance copywriting.
