5.0 out of 5 stars A good reference for any student of English., 6 Jan 2002
Angela Burt has divided her book into units instead of chapters, the first two of which explain the difference between a dictionary and a thesaurus. The sections include tests with the answers at the end of the book. The units are classified under People; Occupations; Animals, Birds and Insects etc. and some are little more than lists of words. Others have more explanation and background, Sexist and Non-sexist Language for example, and Eponyms, people whose names have been used for such things as bloomers, decibel and freesia. Confusables gives words that have different spellings and meanings and are often confused - amoral/immoral, childish/childlike, complement/compliment. Many of the examples given in Americanisms and Foreign Words and Phrases in English are in common use, but there are some less familiar. The unit on Word Roots gives instances of Latin and Greek derivations showing how the knowledge of the basic word can guide to the understanding of a strange English word like sesquipedalianism.
Prefixes and Suffixes have useful hints, and Proverbs is no doubt helpful to those whose first language is not English.
A fascinating book, that will entertain, as well as inform, anyone interested in the English language.
