Product Description

Tibor Fischer

"Izaac Walton with attitude and Mogadon. Joyride brilliantly captures the bucolic dark side." --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Derek Beaven

"The American dream is deftly filleted of its glamour by a dangerous Englishman. Petley's style is like acid on a plate, biting into whatever it sees and leaving extraordinary linguistic marks." --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars A joy to read!, 25 Nov 2002
What impresses me most about this book is the power of the writing. Dexter Petley has the gift of making the world he describes a concrete experience for the reader through his language. There's no flashiness, no "look at me, the Writer", but a true art that brings a world to perceptible life.

The same gift is at work in the characters of Joyride, too. There's no sense of cleverness, of characters being inserted to fulfill some narrative requirement. These are real people, moving and acting in their own space, and provoking real reactions in the reader.

That said, it's not a simplistic work. It is as layered and complex as life is for all of us. Tragic in the modern sense of what is not done or said when it should be, what is not achieved when it might have been. But so very much alive and knowable are the people in this world that this in itself creates a sense of redemption. And that feels to me like the mark of a true artist.

I recommend this to anyone hungry for real literature.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful. Different. Wonderfully different., 25 Jun 1999
By A Customer
The blurb on the inside cover says that this book is unlike anything else in modern fiction, and I think that might be right. Petley uses language in a unique way, unwrapping wonderful metaphors and mesmerising the reader with unexpected linguistic pyrotechnics. He is a fine, fine writer, and has written a touching, wistful, elegiac book. Highly recommended. Unusual and beautiful.
