Product Description

Synopsis
A debut novel set in a decaying New Mexican village, which conveys messages about the enduring power of love and the sanctity of place and history. After young Jose Montoya's parents are killed one August morning by a cow, it seems to his aunt Ramona that some members of the family are more quick than dead.

4.0 out of 5 stars A gentle surprising book., 25 Aug 2001
By A Customer
The best thing about this book is that it is so unassuming. The pace is gentle and the characters are sympathetic and recognisable, even the humour is understated. The description of the village and village life in Guadalupe (including the cooking carried out by its female population) is fascinating. I had not heard of the author or the book before, but having begun to read, I knew immediately I had chosen well. In fact before you know it you have finished it and, hardly realising it, you have learnt a lot about life, death and the love of our families. I recommend this book to anybody who is interested in these basics of life...

5.0 out of 5 stars Rich and amusing, 31 Dec 1998
By A Customer
This well-crafted story set in New Mexico was a treat: Marquez-esque arrivals of the dearly departed; wives with complusive tortilla making disorders; and lots and lots of family and family troubles. A fine first novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars accessible & profound & outrageous, 26 Dec 1997
By A Customer
This is my favorite kind of book: unselfconsciously literary, funny, profound, filled with characters I would like to meet, set in a place where I would like to live, telling a real story that is complete fantasy. --Mary Overton
