Product Description
Synopsis
Vegetarianism has often been closely allied to radical movements in religion and philosophy. The mythical Hyperboreans lived for a thousand years on a vegetable diet, Pythagoras, Ovid and Seneca were vegetarians as were Sir Thomas More, John Evelyn, Leonardo da Vinci, Rousseau and Shelley. In the Dark Ages religious philosophers began to interpret Biblical texts looking for God's law on what people should eat. And not consuming blood but still eating meat became a great anxiety in the Christian West after the Renaissance. From the sixteenth century animal rights were rediscovered (it had been a concern of the Ancient World) and was linked to slavery and socialist ideals. In the twentieth century the idea that vegetarians lacked aggression took a severe blow after the example of Hitler as vegetarian. This history of vegetarianism could also be viewed as a history of radical movements which have questioned society's orthodoxy.

5.0 out of 5 stars all you need to know on vegetarianism: a must-have, 14 Jan 1999
By A Customer
a typical book by Colin Spencer: thoroughly documented, stretching time (from big apes to the web-surfing biped), distances (worldwide), and human mind (veg'ism is non-violence/health/ environmentally awareness/ ressource saving). You'll like this book if you like history, food, humanities. In fact, I find it so rich, informative but no-fuss that I'm translating it into French! I'm now on my way to veg'ism, though Spencer is no proselyte. A Must-have whether you're interested in diet, veg'ism, history, cooking etc... let me know what you think!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating book, 12 Dec 2006

(REAL NAME)
I tried vegetarianism a few years ago, and this book was one of my "readers". It's a fascinating, well-written and erudite book, and kept me with my nose in the pages for an entire camping holiday in France! It didn't work for me, in that I soon started eating meat again and felt much better as a result, but that doesn't detract (for me) from its virtues as a classic and highly-readable book. Vegetarians will no doubt love it, as it confirms everything they believe, but non-veggies can just enjoy a great book that expands the mental horizons and teaches a lot about the human animal. Very persuasive (just not quite persuasive enough for me) and highly-recommended.
