5.0 out of 5 stars Essential walking guide, 3 Jun 2009
By J. Giese (London, UK) - See all my reviews

This guide is excellent for anyone who goes to the Cote d'Azur wanting more than sun- and star-gazing. The walks described are always very easy to follow. Descriptions are accurate regarding places as well as walking times.

Walks are varied: lush woods as well as drier coastal regions can be explored and there is bound to be a walk near you, no matter where you stay. The walks range from a short stroll to a day hike, and can be combined with the car tours, maybe even doing more than one walk on a day. So they really offer something for everyone. The maps are also detailed enough to allow the experienced walkers room for alterations of the route (and suggestions are often included). That way, one can for example often do a round-walk even if an A-to-B walk is the main one described.

So far, we haven't explicitly followed any car tours, but they do give useful ideas for which places would be worth visiting. The walks also often include historic sites, e.g. Roman aqueducts, which makes them more interesting.

When walking is on our holiday agenda, we won't leave without the local sunflower guide!

5.0 out of 5 stars the small but mighty holiday essential, 13 April 2009

The fantastic Sunflower series of guides is a "must" for anyone who is holidaying in an region covered by these books. This particular book spans a wide and diverse area. The Alpes Maritimes are not as well known as their big cousins the Alps, but are arguably less frequented and very spectacular. The walks in the book are superb. Lac de Trecolpas stands out to me. it's not too arduous but stunning, and even in June you may well find yourself in snow. Each walk is graded and many have suggestions for shorter (or longer) alternatives. The accompanying maps are quite adequate.Car tours also well described and can only add to your enjoyment. Don't leave home without a copy!
