Product Description

Product Description

A guide to Western Crete, designed for walkers, botanists, or anyone who wants to get off the beaten track. It covers both tours and walks in the area, as well as 25 short walks and picnic suggestions, suitable for hot summer days or for those who have young children. There are colour topographical walking maps and a fold-out touring map, covering the whole of Crete and showing the location of all the walking tours in the book. Bus timetables are also included.

About the Author

Jonnie Godfrey worked on Crete for several years and, as a travel PR on her return to England, has taken many press groups to the island. Elizabeth Karslake, a photographer, joined Jonnie to undertake the huge job of mapping out, photographing and describing tours and walks over the whole island; together they produced the first walking guides for Crete.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a 'must have' book for anyone visiting Crete, 17 Sep 2001
By A Customer
If you are thinking of visiting Crete and only have room for one book then this is the one that I would recommend that you tuck into your suitcase because it is designed to give glimpses into the 'hidden Crete' to people with all levels of fitness and inclination. It offers car-tours that introduce you to Cretan life and history, both ancient and modern. The walks are designed to start and finish near public transport so a car is not necessary and they cater for all levels of walking ability. The clear and easy to follow directions for the walks and car tours are particularly necessary as until very recently we have found it impossible to acquire proper walking maps of the island. The famous Samaria Gorge walk is covered but so are other less well known and equally rewarding gorges among the quite extensive number of walks on offer. It also suggests several alternatives to Samaria, from the Omalos plateau. I especially recommend the route up to the Linoseli Col on Gingilos.

The book is produced a handy 'pocket-sized' format and beautifully illustrated with colour photgraphs that make you long to pull on your walking boots at once! If you are of a slightly less energetic frame of mind the picnic sites are well chosen and provide the opportunity for a gentle amble entirely suitable for all ages.

We have just returned from Crete and this book added immeasurably to the enjoyment of our stay there.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, 3 Oct 2001
The best thing to say about 'Landscapes of Western Crete' is that is makes an excellent work of fiction.

Bearing in mind we only tried to do four of the walks (09/01) described in this book, and that Sunflower guides for other locations have resulted in excellent walking holidays (La Gomera, La Palma and Madeira), a lot of the information contained here is at best misleading and at worst completely incorrect - sometimes it is hard to imagine that the authors have actually done some of the walks. The addendum helped a bit, but Sunflower guides still refuse to post the most up-to-date info on their web site.

Basically, wait until a completely new edition is published before buying this particular Sunflower guide.
