5.0 out of 5 stars A guide for active people., 12 Jun 2002
We spent a week in Spain this spring, in a little town between
Benidorm and Alicante called Villajoyosa. It's difficult to find good guidebooks for people who enjoy hiking, so we were happy to
find this guide on the internet. We picked out four different
walks and combined them with part of a trip by car. We started with coastal walks and ended up on two afternoon walks in the impressive mountains not far from the busy coast. We were surprised to find the tiny road and the ruins of a house not far from the 3 mile stone on the road. We were in the middle of nowhere, but could easily find our way. The book has a foldout
map to plan your walks/car excursions and rather detailed "maps"
of each walk. Good descriptions, lots of useful information and
walks in all categories makes this a useful guide for most people. I chose not to try the walks where they gave a warning to people who have a problem with vertigo, I'm glad they stopped me. We found out that the couple who wrote this book
walked a bit more slowly than us. They give times to help you to find where to turn off the path, and we must admit we made a point of beating them...... We are planning to by more guides from this series, it makes it possible to get away from the crowded tourist traps. The flowers were beautiful in May!

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful even on summer trips, 30 Oct 2003
By A Customer
We took this guide on our family holiday to the resort Denia during the heat wave of summer 2003, and even though we only used it twice, it helped us get off the beaten track, discover some areas we would have not known about and just give a different perspective to our visit there.
I found some of the directions were a bit confusing to follow unless I read them extremely carefully, especially when I was simultaneously dealing with the children. We completely missed a critical turn at the beginning of one walk, although we still discovered some lovely coves.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good walks- but with a caveat, 21 Jun 2009

(REAL NAME)
In principle this is a useful guide to have, and it gets you to some really wonderful places in the mountains of the Alicante and Valencia provinces. But you need to be aware that there are numerous errors in the text and maps, which can make your walk longer than you expected.

Also some of the paths have become so overgrown that it can become a hack. In these cases the guide should be updated and if necessary the route modified. We have extensively used the 2nd and 3rd editions of this guide, and now there is a fourth edition, which has the same walks. I hope they have researched the routes, rather than simply reprinting the old mistakes with a few new photos thrown in.

On their web site there is an update page for each of the series, which is worth reading, but it gets confusing when the writers of the comments can be referring to an older edition, and hence the errors become compounded. As I say, I sincerely hope that the 4th edition has been properly rechecked... in which case all the old updates can be deleted from their web site.

If you are lucky enough to have the relevant 1:25,000 map then that can help if you get lost. But these maps are difficult to obtain in Spain. The 1:50,000 are the next best, but when it comes to the real detail they are lacking. So this makes it all the more important for the guide to be checked and rechecked before publishing. How many times have I repeated that! Stewart Muir
