4.0 out of 5 stars Azores tourist guide, particularly good for walkers, 4 Oct 1999
By A Customer
This is an excellent book, containing some information that is difficult to get in any other. It starts with a useful overview of the islands from a visitor's point of view - tourist information, climate, currency, etc. The Azores is an excellent destination for "nature tourism", and Mr Stieglitz is clearly a keen and very fit walker - following its general introduction, the book contains detailed descriptions, including good maps, of some two dozen walks which can be undertaken on each of the islands. A small note of warning needs to be sounded - the author's time estimates for the walks assume a fairly high degree of fitness; but the grading he gives each walk appears to be reasonably accurate in our experience. The book also suits non-walkers, since a number of picnic outings, suitable for motorists, are also described. One small caveat; the book is a few years old, and this is reflected in the content; there is no mention of some useful tourist infrastructure information, such as the good cellphone coverage in the Azores, nor the existence of ATms in the banks. But, as a general purpose guide for touists interested in the Azores countryside, this book is difficult to beat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Azores: flowered tracks, 5 April 2001
By A Customer
The Azores book is really nice. It's the perfect company for walkers who wish to be surprised by the gentle charm of these wonderful islands. Andreas book helps a lot. You're not alone in the island with this book in your pocket. Every moment you've got by your side the expert and accurate guide. The book is pointing out the way and you have to explore the path and the incredible azorean scenery with wide and heartsome eyes. The book is your compass and you're the stunned person who discovers the islands beauties walking along flowered tracks. Many thanks, Andreas

4.0 out of 5 stars A book full of information and journeys, 7 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Having always wanted to visit the Azores, and now waiting for my departure date in April 2001, this book is a wealth of information. Not only does it contain maps of the principal islands, it details the main features of each island then proceeds to give advice on bus routes, car routes and walking routes to those places deemed to be of interest. The journey time, condition of the roads and opening times of many of the places of interest are also stated.

There are excellent colour pictures and the descriptions of the principal places, and those passed en route, seem to be detailed and are certainly tantalising.

I shall be taking this book on my holiday and will gladly report back on its usefullness. I fully expect it to be an invaluable companion to somewhere I have not previously visited.

The inclusion of important Portuguese phrases and questions is a thoughful touch and for those who do not speak Portuguese should be sufficient for the traveller.

Not many books are available on this area of the world and I think this one is going to be useful. Certainly it is different from other guides and information to travellers.
