This indispensable pocket guide contains a huge number of walks from bases throughout the region (including Capri) - an area of exceptional beauty, ideal for exploration, but where rugged terrain and steep cliff faces mean that paths are seldom totally straightforward - eg there are few obvious coastal paths - and guidance is required to make the most of the experience.

The walks are presented in segments with plentiful ideas for combining them into itineraries - or you can make up your own. There are lots of good ideas for excursions, interesting and well presented information on things to see and do and an excellent section on public transport, which substantially cuts down on the usual planning time (although current timings do need to be checked). Most importantly, the walk directions are extremely accurate and clear to follow, timings are reliable and regional maps are included.

There are walks for all abilities, suitably graded - but the terrain does involve a lot of steep climbing up and down and the walks claimed to be 'easy' would not be suitable for say taking grandma for a stroll! Probably more for the dedicated walker on balance.

Our only contention with the author was that we saw rather more snakes than we had been led to expect! Fortunately they were not that interested...

All in all, an indispensable guide for the walker in the region - we had a wonderful time and would have been (literally) lost without it.

Alas that we found this book too late! It is a very well written, very detailed guide to walking over the hills of the Costiera Amalfitana. It contains maps and is all around useful. Useful tips on buses and how to get around. If you are going to the region, I very much recommend getting this book. It opens up parts of the region that most tourists do not see.
