Amazon.co.uk Review

The Venetian Lagoon is full of small island communities who do things their own way, and hardly acknowledge the authority of the local police, let alone the Italian state. When, in A Sea of Troubles two Pellestrina fishermen are murdered, and their boat set alight, Commisario Brunetti has trouble finding anyone in the small barren fishing port who will talk to him, let alone help him catch the killer. The only person able to break through to them is his elegant friend and ally Elettra, who has relatives there with whom she regularly stays--Brunetti neither wants to put her at risk nor cares to examine too closely why he cares so very much what happens to her... As always with Leon's chatty bittersweet novels of police procedure, this is stronger on emotion than on puzzle--the actual process whereby Brunetti finds out who killed unpleasant old Giulio and personable young Marco is solidly laid out, but not especially unpredictable. What is important to us, though, is her undoubted capacity to take us through the emotions--Elettra's combination of excitement at actually doing police investigation rather than office politics with a rebound fling with a local fisherman; Brunetti's concern that he is getting in over his head emotionally. --Roz Kaveney --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

This novel sees police secretary Signorina Elettra drawn into danger, as she volunteers to go undercover among the clam fishermen of the Venetian Lagoon. And Commissario Brunetti finds himself torn between duty and his feelings for her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Donna Leon Triumphs Again!, 15 Jun 2001
By Billy J. Hobbs "billhobbs" (Tyler, TX USA) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Sea of Trouble (Hardcover)
Donna Leon simply is a mesmerizing writer. No other author--and some do come close--approaches her today in terms of suspense, characterization, plot development, and social significance. In "Sea of Trouble," she continues her exceptional level of excellence. I could hardly wait for this edition to arrive.

Guido Brunetti has his hands full, once more. Two men (a father and his son) are found murdered in a sunken fishing boat in the waters off Pelligrina. However, the villagers close ranks and are in no hurry to cooperate with the police. Enjoining the services of Signorina Ellatra, Brunetti begins a painful, plodding investigation. With this type of story, Leon is quite good--and she never lets up on the environmental issues ("Don't eat the shellfish!").

Her murderers don't come as surprises in the final pages, as Leon doesn't use this device; instead, she depends upon the brilliant thinking of Brunetti and his team to bring the guilty, whom we know early enough, to bear. This is not to say that "Sea of Trouble" doesn't contain great suspense--it does. And Leon, who clearly is in love with Venice, captains this book in the best of traditions. Lucky she has Guido Brunetti and his staff and family as crew members. Don't miss this one!

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great read from Donna Leon, 1 May 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Sea of Trouble (Hardcover)
Donna Leon's books are ideal escapism for anyone who is fascincated by Italy, especially by Venice and the Venetians. The main characters have grown with each book in the series and I have become very fond of each and every one of them. This book is largely set away from the Venice known by tourists and, in finding out 'who dunnit', examines the isolated lives of the vongolari, the fishermen who make a living catching the clams that tourists wolf down on a daily basis. The brutal murder seems to serve only to give us an excuse to investigate these people's lives ... far more interesting is the search for clues and unpicking of people's lives. One of my favourite Donna Leon characters meets their end in this book and I know I will miss them in her subsequent titles. I would recommend this book wholeheartedly. It might not be Donna Leon's best to date but it improved my Easter no end. A compelling and enjoyable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Venetian Gem, 29 Aug 2001

I saved this book for months to take with me on my summer vacation to the incomparable La Serenissima. How delightful to read this book while visiting some of the islands of the lagoon. As always Leon's evocation of place is delicious and her recurring cast of characters fascinating. Most sadly Leon's more recent additions to the Commissario Brunetti series are not available in the United States. Why?
