Amazon.co.uk Review
Kathy Reichs' forensic anthropologist Tempe Brennan is arguably the best of the current crop of thriller pathologists--quiet in her desire to avenge the helpless and coldly clinical in her intelligence. Her third outing, Deadly Decisions, pits her reconstructive skills against a bunch of Hell's Angels with a taste for ultra-violence. She pieces together the jigsaw fragments of identical twins and she finds herself engaged in identifying the teenage girl whose skull and long bones turned up near the grave of some earlier victims of inter-gang strife. In addition to the usual fascinating material about the identification of human bones, Reichs tells us all about the way that biker gangs have become a serious part of the criminal underworld, a subculture with a taste for mayhem and with rules it is death to break. This tactful abridgement for audio includes all the details one could wish of Tempe's gruesome trade, but not at the expense of her bad hair days, her irritating nephew and the rest of her messy private life. Katherine Borowitz's quiet characterisation brings us close to the cool intense delicacy of Reichs's character, without ever quite becoming so quiet as to be monotonous. --Running time approx 5 hours --Roz Kaveney

Product Description
Temperance, forensic anthropologist for the state of Quebec, is recalled from a course for a gruesome duty. Biker war is raging in Quebec and two of its foot soldiers have blown themselves up. She is the person qualified to make sense of what remains.

1.0 out of 5 stars Tiresome, 9 Nov 2002
By A Customer
I recommend you buy this book if you really like silly dialogs that lead to exhaustive lectures on forensics techniques. I really think I would enjoy the technical explanations if they were presented as footnotes rather than being embedded in the text as responses to unlikely questions from supposedly experienced people. The story develops slowly, and loads of mysteries keep cropping up, however, I start worrying when I notice that the end of the book is getting closer and closer and there is no sign that there will be solutions to all mysteries... Reichs manages to spoil all the fun by solving the mysteries in less than five pages, and worse, the solution has nothing to do with the whole investigation described in the book, I mean, the tiring investigation is useless, because someone else comes out of the blue and spill the beans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good stuff from Tempe, 21 Feb 2003

I've actually had a pop at Kathy Reichs for the latest audio book effort 'Grave Secrets' so was glad to hear this one from the back catalogue and find it far more satisfying.

Tempe's life is well brought to life in the sparse narration and the writing does not stretch too far as it does later in the series (not every metaphor is a smart-ass one). The book doesn't fall into the trap of making the main threat to the first person narrator (they aren't going to die, are they)so maintains tension effectively. The bikers are good baddies and the sick twist around the moving of some bones and a photograph is very good.

Small criticism. The obsession with getting the rather hackneyed title into the text. I counted four dumb mentions.

Generally very good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Whether biker, mod or rocker, this is a good listen., 2 Mar 2001

Vive la différence! Why a story should not be set in Montreal I really don't know. It just hadn't occured to me. So this casual purchase was a great surprise and, I'm pleased to say, a good listen. I listened to most of it in the car. This was successful on long journeys. Shorter journeys required some rewinds. A lot of detail, which I quite liked. And the typical Frenchies! A good story. Personally I had a Lambretta.
