5.0 out of 5 stars an excellent story, dealing with difficult issues., 26 May 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Prophet (Paperback)
Set in the fast paced world of an american newsroom, Peretti shows how self interest combined with office politics combines to hurt a plethora of people. Sin, is at the centre of the book, and shows how, when apart from God, deeds hurt others in many ways. Peretti deals unflinchingly with abortion, showing the hidden agonies of regret and, as a result, subsequent self righteousness of one of his characters. In addition he shows how God gives prophecy to the world today and how living for Him can be painful but also righteous. As ever, an excellent novel which, whilst being highly enjoyable is also deeply thought provoking, and for many, provocative.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great stroy but appalling diatribe, 2 Jan 2009

This review is from: Prophet (Paperback)
Frank is an excellent story teller in the vein of a John Grisham novel, fast paced with twists and turns in the plot.

The story of the main character's return to faith and his discovery of his prophetic gift was also beautifully portrayed.

However, I was deeply shocked by the tone of his writing on the abortion theme. The characters who were pro choice were presented as caricatures; a radical feminist who hated men and a 'grim-faced' woman. They were shown as having no concern about a badly run clinic whose incompetencies had resulted in deaths and no desire to ensure abortions were safe. Given that one of the reasons people are pro-choice is to avoid unsafe home abortions, this just didn't ring true to me.

I suspect that this strongly polarised style of writing would find more home in the States where people appear to be more concerned about a politician's views on abortion than their ability to do their job.
