Product Description

Product Description

An original and imaginative examination of the effect of the Lusitania sinking on Ireland, The book acknowledges for the first time: - the heroic rescue work undertaken by local fishermen and lifeboats, - those who tended to the dead and succoured the living, - those who served on a Coroner's jury, - those who worked as bodyhunters scouring the coast in response to posted rewards, and much more. It examines the ripples cast upon Irish shores by the vanishing of the vessel after it was hit by a German torpedo. In particular it tells the stories of numerous Irish passengers and crew who were aboard the doomed vessel. It also highlights the rich legacy of history that resides in the Lusitania graves in Ireland.

About the Author

Senan Molony was born in Dublin in August 1963 and is married with two children. He has worked as a journalist with Irish Press, Evening Herald, The Star and Irish Independent. His previous books are: The Irish Aboard Titanic (Wolfhound, 1999); Celtic Mists (Phoenix. 1987) and A Ship Accused (Cedric, 2002). His interest in naval history stems from his maternal uncle, Cmmdr Michael Ryan RN, OBE, who was sunk twice in the Second World War, surviving for a fortnight in an open boat in the South China Sea, and a paternal uncle, Lt-Cmmdr Liam Molony, who became Flag Officer of the Irish Naval Service.

5.0 out of 5 stars A well written treatment, 13 Feb 2007
By Michael Poirier (RI) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Following the success of his book, The Irish Aboard the Titanic, Senan Molony has crafted another book; Lusitania: An Irish Tragedy.
There are many photos of passengers and crew not used before and many accounts that have not found their way into books. Authors such as Diana Preston, David Ramsay, and others chose easily accessible accounts through archives used by Hickey, Smith and Hoehling. Molony decided the standard accounts have been re-hashed enough and did research to uncover never told before stories. It shows a general laziness in other authors to go with the readily accessible versus going out and doing actual research. Congratulations to Molony on showing the disaster affected Ireland and her people and putting a new spin on the Lusitania story.

Excellent book by Senan Moloney; a lot of information presented in a different way so as not to be too heavy a read. It was recommended to me by a friend as the best Lusitania book written so far.
