4.0 out of 5 stars Simple tricks explained for the novice web designer, 26 Nov 2002
By nicholas w baxter (Near Kirkby Lonsdale, Lancashire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Having been in the web design business for only one year, there are still many questions to I needed to be answered regarding web promotion. Phil Bradley goes a long way to clearing up the mysteries of gaining high hit count's for your site and dispelling some of the myths and bad practice which many designers think will help promote their site, the truth being the exact opposite. The book starts off gently with the often overlooked planning of a site and covers good design issues before moving on to specific ways to promote a site, from developing content to keep users coming back, to electronic marketing techniques. The book is written in a easy to read and humorous question and answer style which works extremely well, progressively building on your developing insight as you read further, this style also allows for quick and easy reference. To back up you learning, constant reference to "Good Sites" are used along with useful Url's where vital web promotional resources can be found to validate, check and improve your promotion tactics.
Whilst I am not what you would call a "Techie", I found the book to be lacking in detail in many areas, but reference to where more information can be found is provided to make up for this lack. The support from Phil Bradleys own site is good and provides relevant examples of the techniques he describes.

On the whole, I would recommend this book to anyone starting off in the web development business as an essential read, but I presume any one with significant experience (like my boss!) will gain little from it. It would need more technical detail to gain the full 5 stars, and thus would be a much larger book!
