Nice book, shame about the index, 19 Sep 2002
Many library professionals have a desire to broaden their horizons by making their service available via the Internet or a local intranet, or to offer completely new services that come under the general heading of "e-information". This book will help many to realise that dream. That said, this is a book of questions rather than answers. That's not a problem, because a book of this nature could not possibly provide a blueprint for everyone's new service. What is needed is a thorough coverage of the factors that must be considered, plus guidance as to where the enquirer might find solutions. This book does a good job of providing exactly that. There is much more here on the "soft" issues, as opposed to the "hard" ones of the kit you need and the nitty-gritty of building networks, etc. There is plenty of coverage on planning, finance, training, marketing and related issues, and it is written from the perspective of people who have tackled these questions themselves and found the answers. I withhold the fifth star from my rating because the index is so poor. This is a book that needs a good index, because the reader is unlikely to need it all at once - it's a book to which you would refer when a particular issue arises. A first-class index would have made this book a "must" for the planner of an e-information service. As it is, it only merits a "should"!
