1.0 out of 5 stars Uninspiring, 5 Jan 2005

I am a firm believer that photographic manuals and guides may be judged(at least in part) by their covers and surely any author without the prowess to design a decent cover should not be permitted to continue any further. There are so many breathtakingly good books on landscape photography that it's a wonder this one ever made it into publication.

It seems to have been thrown together without any thought towards writing style, layout or even aesthetic appearance and many of the photos in this book are simply abominable, especially considering Hedgecoe's repected status as a photographic tutor. Even the technical information is sparse and often frustratingly obvious to the point of being patronising for anyone who has ever held a camera. Stay well away from Hedgecoe's range of books, this man must be stopped!

1.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre, 14 Jan 2006
By Ryan Li "Photographer" (London, UK) - See all my reviews

Let's admit it, most photographers (myself included) have at some point in their lives bought a John Hedgecoe book, not having known any better. If you're a beginner, don't make the same mistake! Light is without a doubt the most important element of landscape photography, yet half the shots in this book are taken in photographically poor conditions (harsh and washed out midday light, or overcast), which to me shows a lack of effort and/or very basic knowledge about the golden rules of landscape photography such as the 'magic hour'.

In this book you will find many other 'gems' of knowledge, a particular example being deliberately not using a tripod to create blurry shots for atmosphere - truly shocking advice for beginners, if only for the reason that Hedgecoe executed this very poorly. (Have a look at some work by Frank Grisdale to see how real landscape photographers do it.)

To give credit to Hedgecoe, there is some useful information for beginners about filters, but that's doesn't justify the purchase of this book. For good advice you'd be much recommended to look elsewhere (e.g., Joe Cornish, Charlie Waite, Niall Benvie to name but a few); books like this will just give you the wrong idea about landscape photography and encourage you to take mediocre pictures.

1.0 out of 5 stars Steer clear., 1 Feb 2004
By A Customer
This is a truly, truly awful book, please save your money! It scores one star only because I don't seem to be able to give it zero.

There are so many good books on the market these days from class acts such as Charlie Waite, John Shaw etc. that there is just no excuse for this kind of drivel. Some of the pictures allowed in this book are simply astounding, "How not to photograph Landscapes" would be a better title!

4.0 out of 5 stars good basic coverage of landscape techniques
This book covers most of what you need to compose good landscape photos. It is well illustrated with some excellent photos - good mix of colour and b&w. Generally recommended
