5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent basic guide to the principles of photography, 6 Jun 2001
By A Customer
It is hard to believe that John Hedgecoe can still produce new books on photography - he's done so many over the last 30 years.

This one is aimed squarely at the beginner who wants to use 35mm SLR cameras - don't expect anything on digital here.

It explains tricky subjects such as depth of field and perspective in terms that are easily understoond by the newcomer. Useful diagrams and tables also help to get the message over.

The quality of illustration is good - with particular emphasis of showing series of pictures, to show the effect of using different settings.

Unlike many photographic manuals, this is neither too long or too big - making it possible to carry around with you. However, there is no skimping on the essential information needed to work a camera, or what yuo will need for certain subjects. The section on composition is also excellent.

There are more thorough books on photography around - but this one gives you the bare essentials in an affordable package.

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommend to everyone, 28 Jan 2009
By Katsock (Essex, UK) - See all my reviews
As the title suggests, this is not primarily aimed at dslr owners - but the basic theory is the same for both slr and dslr - and if you want that basic theory in simple to understand steps with clear diagrams and illustrations to back it up, this is definitely what you're looking for, regardless of whether you're a digital user or not.

If you'd rather just take the picture and make it pretty in Photoshop and don't care whether it's taken right in the first place, this is definitely not what you're looking for ...
