Product Description

Product Description
Published in the year of her 90th birthday, these reminiscences of the widow of Prince Henry, younger brother of Edward VIII and George VI, offer insights into a bygone age. Herself the daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch and Queensberry, the author describes a childhood spent divided between such homes as Montagu House, Eildon Hall, Drumlanrig Castle, Dalkeith Palace, Bowhill House, Boughton and Langholm. She evokes a vanished world in which armies of servants and tons of luggage travelled from house to house as the family progressed around the country. She then moves on to her time as a debutante, to London society, to extended stays in Kenya with her uncle, Lord Francis Scott, and finally to her marriage into the Royal Family and how it affected her. The previously unpublished illustrations are from Princess Alice's private albums and scrapbooks.

4.0 out of 5 stars The oldest member of the British royal family ever - the most perfect supporting royal , 11 Jan 2009

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)

Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester (1901-2004)was the consort of Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, the third son of George V and Queen Mary. She was thus the sister-in-law of George VI and Edward VIII and
aunt of Queen Elizabeth II.

Born on Christmas Day - her second first name therefore was Christabel -
as the third daughter of the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry and his wife Lady Margaret Bridgeman. She married Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester,in a private ceremony, in the chapel of Buckingham Palace, on November 6 1935 due to her father's death in October of that year. It followed a rather normal royal life with the highlight that her husband served as Governor General of Australia (1945-1947). The Duke and Duchess had two sons: Prince William (1941 - 1972) and Prince Richard , the present Duke of Gloucester (born 1944).

The Gloucesters - while being the senior Royals during the reign of Edward VIII and George VI - were never really taking the spotlight. The glamourous Kents captured far more the attention of the general public.

Honestly ,I found them always a bit boring. But I have changed my view after I had read these memoires. First published in 1981 under the title The Memoirs of Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, a revised edition as Memories of Ninety Years was published in 1991. Here Princess Alice appears to be a well grounded and independently spirited woman, quite a private person who did not shrink from duty and put duty first. She was not a woman who seeked public adoration and her public persona was quite different from her private one. Somehow she reminds me of HM The Queen. The death of her eldest son was properly the shock of her life. Of course, this are her recollection and there is not much of critical remarks and honestly assesment of her life. But it is a start. It is a shame that the Gloucester - past and present - have not attracted more attention or have been subject of many books. In many ways they are the most perfect supporting royal, deserving more credit for their work.

But at least she became the oldest member of the British royal family in history.

A great addition to one's royal libriary.
