1.0 out of 5 stars Good for walk ideas but vague directions can get you lost., 27 Mar 2002
By A Customer
Living in Lancashire is great if you enjoy walking. Both my girlfriend and myself love it (walking, that is!) and we picked up Terry's book with the expectation of some enjoyable walks ahead. So far we've completed two walks and I must say I'm getting a little frustrated with the directions given in the book; two walks and lost both times mainly due to directions such as:
"a few steps later and go through the gate" - which gate Mr. Marsh, the one on the left or the one straight ahead? Or, "go through the gate and then carrying on in the same direction" - aarrgghh, which direction, the one we were travelling in before getting to the gate or the one we had to follow in order to go through the gate?
There are many examples where the directions are vague, ambiguous or just downright wrong. I have two theories on how this book was written; theory 1 - Go on the walk, finish at the pub, get completely blotto, scrawl directions on the back of a beer mat. Theory 2 - Get out the relevant OS map, draw a circular walk near a pub (probably using a thick marker pen), endeavour to create directions. Either way, you end up with this book.
Ok, I admit that we never got completely lost but that's only because we are experienced walkers not because of this book, we certainly ended up way off track in a vain attempt to follow the directions. This book is definitely not worth its price tag but I would consider paying 1 pound for it just for the walk ideas it provides.

In a nutshell: may help you to find some new walks but the directions are as clear as the mud you'll find yourself walking through.
