The impact of technology on the office working environment is widely visible. These advances are greatly facilitated by the introduction of standards for document and data interchange. The purpose of this guide is to discuss some of the most important and influential standards in this area and their relevance to a variety of organisations and businesses. The guide by Richard Carr is aimed primarily at the senior manager who has overall responsibility for an organization's information technology policy, strategy and direction. Part I provides a summary, followed by a discussion of the market requirements and the potential benefits of standardization in document interchange. Part II examines the relevant standards in more detail and the issues related to integration and procurement are addressed. Appendices contain suggestions for further reading and a glossary of terms.
