I've read this several times now and the story always captivates me. It is a story about two children who, without planning to, run away from home. The action all takes place in one day. The boy is resentful of his father's impending remarriage and this triggers a train of events. With no idea where they are going, it is not long before they are drawn into the magic of an ancient driftway. They meet a travelling man with a covered cart and travel with him. The boy, Paul, picks up messages from people who have lived in the places they go through. The story has a timeless quality, a sense of stepping outside the normal flow of life, partly through these messages and partly by way of the character of the travelling man. Penelope Lively's writing style is economical and vivid. With just a few words she brings the story to life. If you have read and enjoyed her other "children's" books then I recommend this one highly. It has the nearly universal characteristic of all good "children's" books ... one way or another, get the parents out of the way.
