Product Description

Product Description

The Thinking Child Resource Book is carefully structured to help practitioners build upon the theoretical and practical advice given in The Thinking Child - Brain Based Learning for the Foundation Stage. In this new book, Nicola Call and Sally Featherstone combine their knowledge and experience to give a wealth of practical suggestions about how to implement brain-based learning techniques in early years settings. The Thinking Child Resource Book can be used independently or as a companion to The Thinking Child. Clear references in The Thinking Child Resource Book direct practitioners to the appropriate pages of The Thinking Child for descriptions of the theory and research behind the practical suggestions Following the same structure as its predecessor for easy cross reference, this book gives advice on a wide range of techniques and activities such as how to engage the multiple intelligences, how to open productive dialogue with young children, how to select and use music, and strategies for increasing children's time on task. It lists more than a thousand ideas on how to use brain-based learning techniques for the foundation stage, including: *Twenty-one ways to foster positive self-esteem; *Forty ways to get creative; *Twenty-four ways to introduce children to ICT; *Seventy-five themes for interesting displays; *Thirty-six ways to involve parents; *Twenty-four activities for circle time; *Thirty ways to exploit VAK - visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learning. Case studies, taken from a wide variety of settings, give an insight into how brain-based techniques can be used to enrich the learning experience of young children, while the four fictitious child characters featured in The Thinking Child are again used to represent some of the best early years practice. The experience of practitioners using The Thinking Child Resource Book will be as exciting as that of the children, as they continue on this brain-based learning adventure together.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good follow up to The Thinking Child, 25 Nov 2003
By A Customer
This is the follow up to The Thinking Child. It is a hugely practical book full of lists of suggestions, and resources to copy. Some of them stand on their own, and some have space for you to adapt to your own particular setting. The book is ring bound and set out so that you can photocopy parts of the book to use for staff meetings or just to use as a reminder, for example, 'Ten ways to line up', and 'Twenty-one ways to bring the outdoors in'.

In addition to tons of practical advice, there are case studies in each section to give context to the theory of brain-based learning. I found that I became quite involved with the characters described and I could identify aspects of children who I have taught over the years in these fictitious characters! I really like the fact that the authors recognise that not every setting has the ideal set up, eg for outdoor play, and that they make suggestions and references to all types of preschool environments.

Overall, a great book. Good illustrations, great practical resources, and an easy read. A book you'll want to keep handy to refer to regularly.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Thinking Child - fantasic resources!, 25 Nov 2003
By A Customer
Having used The Thinking Child for several months, I was really impatient to get hold of a copy of the resources book for our early years staff. It was worth the wait!

This book is wire bound for easy photocopying. The layout is really impressive, with clear illustrations and examples. There are numerous lists of suggestions for different aspects of foundation stage teaching. We have already used pages as starting points for staff meetings, and it has been an enormous help in educating the Key Stage 1 and 2 teachers about the Foundation Stage. The case studies give a really good context and have inspired some great discussions. The lists of ideas and resources for different aspects of brain-based learning stand on their own very well, or can be added to or adapted for individual use.

Like ALPS, this book will be well used in our school for years to come. I thoroughly recommend it!
