5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Title on Boer War, 17 Aug 2009
By Stephen Russell "Steve" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
There has been an awful lot Writen on the Boer War over the years, yet somehow it remains a forgotten Colonial War. Maybe because the Boers could actually fight back. And it gets over Shadowed by the Zulu and Sudan wars, which are much more colorful and get the Hollywood Treatment. Never the less the Boer War is one of the most important wars of the last century. And involved about 450,000 Servicemen and Support Services by its finish in 1902 costing 200,000,000+ And changing the way the British fought its Wars. Colenso was typical of the Early stage of the War with British Forces Attacking in a Conventual way and underestermating an enemy who did not play by the same rules. As Kippling said "Giving Britan a good lesson"
Ian Knight as Always covers the Lead Up to the Battle and Battle Itself and its aftermath in great detail. And even has a bit on how to Wargame the Conflict, A great help to a wargamer like myself. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in this war
