5.0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS! An absolute must!, 17 Feb 2007

What a treat! Fantastic, thought provoking, creative stories that can be used in SO many different ways! Children loved them......my neice and nephew, my class and at whole school level (including the adults!). I had children from different classes doing additional tasks in their own time to bring to me (endings for the stories....creative art) as the stories had stimulated them so much during the whole school session! Fantastic just for reading....or can be adapted to far far more including role-play, circle time, creative and analytical discussion, writing tasks etc. Follow up activities/suggestions REALLY useful - photocopiable templates, thinking skills identified and explained fully, suggestions on ways to develop thinking in the classroom - tools and techniques. The book is 'easy on the eye' making it very user friendly. Fantastic value for money. One of the best books I've bought!

5.0 out of 5 stars ...and they all lived...how?...you decide., 23 Feb 2007
The title claims that these stories wake up your mind. They certainly do. Some with a gentle whisper, others with the impact of a gas explosion. And once your mind has been aroused from its dormancy, the 'big questions' will keep it awake - just like your neighbour's car alarm (and yes..they have gone away for the weekend!). My Year 6 students are still discussing 'The Best Question' one month after being introduced to it.
If you are a teacher who likes to see children actively engaged in their learning this book is for you. Whether an experienced or novice classroom practitioner, it clearly explains concepts and contains a wealth of suggested development activities linked to each story. Moreover, the types of activities can be adapted to engage children in diverse curriculum areas.
Howeve, it maybe best to buy a spare copy. Once your colleagues start borrowing it...you know what i'm saying?!
Finally, if Mike Fleetham was a type of fruit I think he'd be a mango..or a Mercedes-Benz. Why? Read the book and come up with your own answers!!

5.0 out of 5 stars HUH?! EH?!, 20 Feb 2007
By Ms. J. Miles "Jo" (Bradford) - See all my reviews

Ready to challenge all learners? A must for anyone who wants to develop children's thinking skills. These witty, fable-like stories flow easily and are entertaining. They are fantastic for speaking and listening, guided reading/writing, PSHCE or other cross-curricular links. Each story is engaging, lending itself to numerous endings. The concept of Thinking Stories will be new to most children so it can be hard initially,oh yesssss, all that thinking for yourself! Even as an adult, I found myself challenged. Great then, that a simple teacher's guide with handy 'ending' prompts will provide a stimulus if you're really stuck. Before you know it, the children will be responding with improved ideas and their imagination will be starting to grow. Suddenly stories and reading are fun again! The 'Buy This' button is only a click away....
