5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, 9 Mar 2002
By A Customer
This is an extremely interesting book. Simply put, it's an anthology of first hand accounts of various historical events, ranging from the ancient world through to the modern day. The editor Jon Lewis does a great job of picking out interesting historical testimony that describes the history we're all so familiar with, but by people who actually witnessed it. It truly makes you feel like you were there yourself. For the price you can't go wrong.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent 'eye-witness' tour of human history from 2000BC to, 14 Dec 1998
By A Customer
Nearly three hundred accounts of the great events in human history -eruption of Vesuvious, Black Death, WWII, moon anding, discovery of America- by those who 'were there' drawn from memoirs, letters and reportage. Vivid and highly readable. Also contains smaller, very human moments eg children playing in Ancient Rome, child marriage in medieval england. Widely viewed by press, uniformly laudatory. If you want a book which brings the past alive, this is it.
