4.0 out of 5 stars A cheap way to get 3 Writer's Digest books, 17 Jun 2003
By HLT (Wales, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
As mentioned in the previous review, this is three books in one.

The first book - "Plot", by Anson Dibbel, provides an interesting read and a fair amount of good advice, but anyone who's been studying and writing fiction seriously won't, perhaps, find much that's new (or highly usable). I read "Plot" hopefully, but I'm still looking for a really good guide to plotting.

The second book is Orson Scott Card's excellent "Character and Viewpoint". In one sense, this package is worth the money just for that - with the proviso that they had to use a rather small typeface (10pt, at a guess) to squeeze this one in. It's readable, but perhaps not as pleasant as the standalone version.

The third book is Lewis Turco's "Dialogue". As with Dibbell's "Plot", I didn't find much that was new to me.

All in all, I'd describe this volume as a package containing Card's excellent "Characters and Viewpoint" with two moderately interesting bonus books.

3.0 out of 5 stars Card completists beware, 21 Nov 1998
By A Customer
While no doubt very worthwhile for budding authors, this book is of little use to Orson Scott Card completists who already have "Characters and Viewpoint", since all the Card material it contains is the full text of that book, unchanged from the stand-alone publication.
