Chas Gardner has been around a long time and the book shows this. Having been a power air-modeller in the past (1980s to early 90s), this was an easy read and introduced the full-size gliding concepts to demonstrate the same on small model versions.

While the edition reviewed was first published in 1995, it doesn't date much and in the end the laws of physics are still the same then as now.

If you're new to gliding or modelling, the section on making free-flight models is a useful primer and it points to resources albeit pre-dating the Internet boom 1998 onwards.

In summary, a four-star on the basis it can be read in an evening, gives some good background and should inspire a bit to have a go - which is what it's all about in the end. A five star rating if it were updated with some newer materials, notes on using Almost-Ready-To-Fly (ARTF) and the expanding area of electric flight that is very common nowadays.
