Product Description

Review

An insight into the greatest, most creative and craziest inventions and their makers. Whether they fell at the first fence or were briefly successful, the 100 or so inventions animatedly discussed here by the author symbolize the eternal triumph of hope over experience. From nautical nightmare and flying fiascos to medical marvels, Hart-Davis celebrates the successes and near-misses as well as the absolute flops in the history of inventions. Classics include the SS Bessemer, an anti-seasickness boat invented in 1875 which proved unsteerable and demolished the pier at Calais on its maiden cross-Channel voyage, or the collapsible birdcage invented in 1879, designed to make going on holiday with feathered friends easier. Its inventor never considered, however, what to do with the bird in the meantime... (Kirkus UK)

Product Description

This work presents 100 stories of weird and wonderful inventions, full-blown and well-developed disasters of what seemed to be brilliant inventions that fell at the first fence, or sometimes the second, like the first steam-powered submarine, still lying on the sea bed off North Wales.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't ever say it's never been tried!, 26 April 2001

A must for those whose have "brilliant" ideas. Those book is full of ideas that should or could have worked and the just plain daft ideas that people have had. Some are almost believable and some just make you smile and shake your head. Un-put-downable from the first, swimming umbrella (!), due to the inventors belief that these would actually work. Don't miss the chapter on flying!
