Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Let's face it, life is frustrating. Friends are unreliable and there's never a shortage of celebrities to cause further exacerbation--from luvvies to brainless sports jocks, not to mention institutions like the church, politics and ugly foreigners with what they ostentatiously call "food". So how do you vent your rage against this carnival of grotesques? Maria Leach has an answer, and has created a compendium of over 700 insults whose range is guaranteed to cause equal delight and offence to readers. So, the Stud Brothers describe Debbie Harry as "the face that launched a thousand whores", and Martin Mull observes that "Having a family is like having a bowling alley installed in your brain". Meanwhile, G K Chesterton describes golf as "an expensive way of playing marbles".

Let down somewhat by a confusing index which indiscriminately lumps together both the originator and the butt of quotes, and a little too reliant on old stalwarts like Oscar Wilde, Groucho Marx and George Bernard Shaw, this book is arguably less wide ranging in its selection than Des MacHale's recent Yet More Wit. However, for its many moments of hilarity, it is well worth reading. --Stephen Portlock
