Product Description

Product Description
The stage manager is at the core of every successful theatre production. He/she organizes, manages and runs the rehearsals and the performances; researches and procures the props and furniture; and provides a creative information flow between everyone involved in the production. Job requirements include superb organizational skills, initiative, resourcefulness, flexibility and an endless supply of patience. This handbook is aimed at students, graduates and all aspirants to stage management, whether amateur or professional, whether the production is on a large or small scale. The book takes the reader through a typical production, week by week from running the rehearsals to running the show. Charts and helpful checklists are included throughout, as well as a selection of blank report forms for photocopying. Other topics covered are: who does what within the production team; theatre unions; the job market; and computerization.

From the Publisher
Gail Pallin is Subject Leader in Stage Management at Queen Margaret College, Edinburgh. Her career began nearly 20 years ago at the Royal Lyceum, and she has since worked in many of the major theatres in Britain, including Derby Playhouse, Pitlochry Festival Theatre, the Haymarket in Leicester and London's Royal Court Theatre. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really 'essential' book for all levels of interest, 16 May 2003
By Anthony Newton (Edinburgh, Scotland) - See all my reviews
As reccomended by Sir Alan Ayckbourn, this book is a step-by-step guide through the entire Stage Management process. It has a clear chronological path, which makes it easy to follow and to read. This structure helps to make it a good reference tool that you can dip into to find advice on a particular part of the process. It also features a set of templates for photocopying or reproducing to help you complete production paperwork such as rehearsal notes and a budget analysis sheet. Sections on stress management and communication skills are practical areas it covers which perhaps other similar books don't.

The font is a suitable size and cartoons break up each section. This helps with the enjoyment of reading it. I have found it to be very helpful when working through productions and when putting together the coursework for my degree course in Stage Management. This really is an 'essential' book for anyone with any level of interest in working a show from behind the scenes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stage Management, 13 May 2003
By Emma McIntyre (Edinburgh, Scotland) - See all my reviews
This is a very useful book which is excellent to have for reference. It contains very clear information on the British Production Process in relation to the work of a Stage Manager. It is also one of the most recent in it's subject field making the information very relevent and up to date. It has lots of helpful hints that I personally have used on several occasions. The book has clear diagrams and each step of the Production Process is explained in detail.

The book is very accessable and easy to read with it's clearly laid out sections, making it easy to find the information that you need quickly. There is also a glossery of Theatre terms which is also useful for reference.

All in all a good book which you will use time and time again.
