Jez Butterworth's astonishing debut play premiered at The Royal Court in 1995. It was instantly declared as being one of the most exciting plays to come from British Theatre for many years. When you read it, you can understand why. MOJO is a fast paced black comedy set in 1950's gangland Soho, where smalltime gangsters hustle for the big time against a background of violence, drugs and rock 'n' roll. It is also an impressive tale of morality and pain. The dialogue is as sharp as a knife and often very funny. Why intellectualize about a play that wasn't intended for that fate. MOJO is a well crafted, precision timed piece of pop theatre; it is also a cracking good read...

This is awful, schoolboy-type gangster fetishism that is so worn at this stage, gratuitously stealing from other (better) sources for dialogue and style and lacking in any depth beyond the flimsiest of caricature. If this is regarded as amongst the most new and exciting in British theatre, no wonder the homegrown industry is in such a state, not to mention cinema.
