Some good info but already out-of-date, 30 Aug 2001
By A Customer
Unfortunately despite a second edition date of 1998, I suspect a rather quick update of the first version (1992) was carried out -- the information is quite severely dated already; however there are some good links and information sources so this would at least prove useful.Fortunately I didn't have time to read this book prior to moving to Italy, otherwise I might never have come! It's overly pessimistic -- in the short paragraph on buying a second-hand car, the main advice is that it can take two years for the car's log book to follow, and it's illegal to drive a car without; surely if this were the case (fortunately not in my experience) everyone would be breaking the law?! This said, despite the over-emphasis on bureaucracy the author has thought of everything you might want to know about, from taxation to importing pets! Perhaps I have a chip on my shoulder too, but I detest such 'ex-patriate' comments as this in the section on Cons of Moving to Italy 'Italian social behaviour and customs can seem totally at odds with the British way of doing things' -- and this is meant to be a reason NOT to move here??
