5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for any expat or soon-to-be expat!, 12 April 2001
By jeri hurd (Connecticut) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Having been an expat myself for five years and having struggled with much of what this book discusses, I can vouch for both its usefulness and its readability. No matter how much you think you know, and pretty much no matter what you WANT to know, it's in this book. I've read several books on living overseas, but what I especially like about this one is its broad range of assumptions regarding the type of job one will have. We're not all corporate executives having to deal with a high pressure life style and LOTS of local help in the form of maids, drivers, gardeners, etc. IT also takes a positive look on living overseas, rather than the usual "I'm stuck going with my husband to a place I don't like; how do I survive?" sort of approach.

It looks at not only the nuts and bolts of daily living, but how to help your family cope, how to deal with going alone, how to get your pets overseas...you name it! Lots of good references, graphs, charts to help you decide whether the expat thing is for you, or even to make your current expat life more agreeable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for anyone moving to a host country, 10 April 2001
By A Customer
The book is brilliant, even though we have been expats for a number of years now, I have picked up some very helpful tips and explanations for my, the family and friends and husbands behaviour, both good and bad. I understand a whole lot more about being removed from ones comfort zone and how it affects us and the extended family. I regarded myself as largely "unaffected" but the authors here let you know the subtle changes and shifts one has to make in order to adapt and be happy, and I realise now that I have been affected by leaving my home country. Thank you, the book is well written, the index is wonderfully detailed and I love the tables, being a "listy" person myself! I am sure that this book is going to make the transition as smooth as possible for all modern nomads.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read for every expat and expat-to-be!, 2 April 2001
By A Customer
As a "Modern Nomad" myself, having spent time in four different countries, I can vouch for the fact that this book is filled with absolutely everything that any expat-to-be would need to know and substantiated with quotes from expatriates who have "been there, done that". I wish so much that I had read this book before we left for our first posting abroad. Congratulations to the Authors for a job well done!
