4.0 out of 5 stars Quite thorough book, but needs revising, 1 May 2001
By A Customer
After having hospital birth with epidural and forceps I decided to do some more reading on home birth and other alternatives. This book gives you a lot of information, but it is very proffesional and it can be hard to read for someone, who needs reassurance and explanation in more simple terms. Everything written is well documented with the list of references at the end. However, there are a few things I believe need revising: I don't believe shaving perineal area is a routine procedure anymore as is not routine application of suppositories or enemas. I give four stars because of that and as a non-proffesional reader who read the book to get information on home vs. hospital delivery. I have to say that I read other books (written by obstetricians) on natural birth who were more reassuring and written in friendlier manner. I do believe a lot of professionals would benefit from it though because it wonderfully explains and gives proofs why some procedures are unnecessary and even dangerous or humiliating. The history of midwifery/obstetrics and different procedures is also very interesting!
