The jeep was the urgent response from Bantam, Willys and Ford to a US Army request for a new military vehicle in 1940. It was, of course, the prospect of US involvement in the war which inspired this specification for a four-wheel drive, three-seater, with room for a .3in machine gun mount, a payload of 600lb, and a top speed of around 50mph; but the design process set in motion by this request was to have wide-reaching consequences, for the resulting machine has set the standards for small military vehicles ever since.
From North Africa to the Pacific; from Normandy to Burma, the jeep (and its many ingenious derivatives) served admirably, in difficult conditions, all over the world during World War II.
