Product Description

From the Publisher

The story of a remarkable military machine.
The name "Jeep" has now entered the realms of legend; mention it and you conjure up an image of the original, definitive off-road motor vehicle. At once ruggedly glamorous and supremely functional, the jeep has played a vital role in most military engagements since World War II, allowing weapons and men undreamed of mobility. The jeep and its descendants have transformed modern warfare.

The jeep was the urgent response from Bantam, Willys and Ford to a US Army request for a new military vehicle in 1940. It was, of course, the prospect of US involvement in the war which inspired this specification for a four-wheel drive, three-seater, with room for a .3in machine gun mount, a payload of 600lb, and a top speed of around 50mph; but the design process set in motion by this request was to have wide-reaching consequences, for the resulting machine has set the standards for small military vehicles ever since.

From North Africa to the Pacific; from Normandy to Burma, the jeep (and its many ingenious derivatives) served admirably, in difficult conditions, all over the world during World War II. The jeep's dramatic role in special forces units such as the SAS and Popski's Private Army did much to immortalize it in popular legend, but the real worth of the jeep, then and in later conflicts such as Korea, the Middle East wars and Vietnam, was in the invaluable support it gave the ordinary soldier.

Jeep Goes to War tells the remarkable story of this unique machine, and brings it right up to date with the latest in a long line of jeep-inspired military vehicles, the HMMWV (or "Hummer"), which played so prominent a role in the recent Gulf War. This beautifully illustrated and authoritative account of the achievements of the jeep in modern warfare, with well over 100 black and white and colour pictures, is a book that will fascinate the enthusiast of military history and the general reader alike. --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

This review is from: Jeep Goes to War (Hardcover)
Having bought this book for reference purposes, I was very excitet when reading it. There are a lot of very fine pictures, covering both the jeep as I knew it but also a lot of variations that I hadnt seen pictures of before. The book are besides the photos filled with information and little stories of the jeep and its use. The jeeps history are covered from the devellopment stages and all the way up to the "jeep" of modern time, the american Hummer.
