The visual arts in Wales are in ferment. The growing fascination in painters, installation artists, sculptors and those working in mixed and electronic media has been reflected both in booming sales and private gallery growth on the one hand and, institutionally, by new public gallery space, a first Welsh pavilion at the 2003 Venice Biennale and the worldwide Artes Mundi Prize. Every so often a book is published which makes you cringe. I suppose the people to blame are the gullable art councils who allow themselves to be conned by such egocentrics as Bala. If he could paint, it might be a shot in the arm for him. In the absence of talent he tries relentlessly to weasel himself into the spotlight. Thankfully, the public is opening its eyes to this scam.
