Synopsis
Jean Earle's sixth collection of poetry is a delightful exploration of inspiration, creativity and the layers of memory which confirms her as one of the most original and moving poets in the UK. In 'The Bed of Memory' Jean Earle shows her delight at the gift of inspiration and hints at a renaissance of creativity. Now in her nineties, her poems are resonant with layers of memory while retaining a lightness of tone and manner more usually associated with poets half her age. They touch on the universal while being as intimate as a letter to a friend. Among the most moving are a series of elegies to her late husband, to whom she was married for seventy years. The process of grief seems to have, paradoxically, unleashed new life and vigour. Jean Earle remains as vividly aware of incidents of daillife as she is to the meaning of a remark overheard and recalled from half a century ago. 'Visiting Light' (third collection) was Poetry Book Society Choice. 'Selected Poems' (fourth collection) was Poetry Book Society Recommendation.
