3.0 out of 5 stars The reasoning or lack of it behind traditions, 6 Jun 2001
"The bride has not uttered a word, save when alone with her husband, since she pronounced her marriage vow. She may not hope to do so until the birth of her first child..." Anni, an intensely sociable girl, gets married to Andras, a young worker in her father's tanyard. Since she is not allowed to speak to anyone except her husband she has to invent a whole new way of communicating with her family. Gestures and facial expressions suddenly become immensely important - Anni finds herself learning skills hitherto unfamiliar to her. As Andras has to slip into a new role of being not only a husband, but a provider of information as well, an unexpected tension rests on the newly married couple. Set in a fictitious country this novel discusses the reasoning or lack of it behind traditions - why do people stick to them, what are their advantages and disadvantages? Moreover, the book reveals several arguments for societies that hold on to the advantages of strong bonds of kinship - a social model that even in this country has not been abandoned too long ago. I like Pugh's perspective on this issue - she seems to side with the unusual point of view, namely that restrictions (like not being allowed to talk to anyone after marriage) have their advantages, too. However, I think this book has a tendency to get rather sentimental - after a while I was a bit annoyed with all those beautiful girls playing with kittens, the ideal couples and the wise and just mothers always knowing what their children want. The book is very simply cut, there are no ambiguities as to the roles of the characters involved or the interpretation of individual situations. Moreover, where style and language are concerned this book is much too simply structured: A book dealing with the subtleties of gestures and facial expressions should offer more than mere interpretations of the relevant gestures. Saying "she gestured to me to stay where I was" is simply not enough.

In short, while I think the book is well worth reading, you shouldn't expect it to be world literature - but then, not every book has to be...

5.0 out of 5 stars Different ways of communication., 10 Jul 2001
By A Customer
This is a gentle story which explores the different ways people communicate, often without words. The setting, characters and situation are subtly clever, and never fail to invoke strong emotions. Read this, it's life-affirming.
