This is a fascinating book covering the life and times of the greatest and most influential rugby player in the world at that time, 'Prince' Gwyn Nicholls. His ideas about playing were years ahead of his time and helped push the game as a whole forward, and largely thanks to his influence Wales developed the open and attractive style that has become associated with them. He was also a colossus in his adopted hometown where his club, Cardiff RFC, became during his playing career and captaincy a dominant club of global stature. Despite the lack of evidence at his disposal, through piecing together from odd interviews, press articles, the opinions of Nicholls' peers etc., Parry-Jones does an interesting job of trying to get inside Nicholls' head to discover his character strengths, flaws, ambitions and motivations. But for me, the best part of this book are the poignantly recreated images of match day atmosphere, particularly the famous Wales v NZ of 1905, when you could almost imagine being there and compare it your own more modern match day experiences. Overall the book should be of great interest for any rugby fan in that it marks a historic period (i.e. its formative years) during which much surviving in the game today was established. It talks of many on- and off-field issues (training, professionalism, national pride, playing styles...) to compare and contrast with the modern day, making for interesting and thoughtful reading.
