Product Description

Product Description

The phenomenal success of budget airlines like Easyjet and Ryanair has completely revolutionized the travel industry: fares of under #30 have become commonplace. Between them, the no-frills airlines now carry a staggering 23 million passengers a year to destinations all over Europe, and its predicted that the market will continue to grwo over the next few years. Tourists can choose from a dazzling array of potential holiday destinations - many of which they may know next to nothing about. "Fly Europe" is a practical, easy-to-use guidebook that provides information on 80 budget airline destinations in one volume. Many of the cities the budget airlines fly to are not traditional tourist destinations and are therefore not covered by individual city guidebooks; equally, tourists may or may not need ot want a full-length, overly detailed city guidebook just for a short break. This book aims to help readers make an informed choice about the best destination to choose; then, once that choice is made and the flights are booked, they will have at their fingertips all the information they need to enjoy a short break in that city. In the introduction, the author outlines what the various budge airlines have to offer and considers the pros and cons of each company. She employs a star ratings system to show which cities are best for sightseeing, shopping, nightlife, restaurants, the arts, romance and family activities. Then, each city section provides details on transport to and around the city, what to see there and why, accommodation (from budget to luxury hotels), eating out, nightlife and shopping, along with a useful map of the city centre.

4.0 out of 5 stars As a guide, it works well, 16 April 2004
First off this book is not a story of how the flight industry has been rocked by the cheap flights offered by budget airlines. That book is elsewhere on Amazon, but this book is worth its money to those of us that like to take advantage of cheap flights and use them for days out. For those that do not know, the main difference between the budget and the old firms was that the new companies gave us the chance to book our outward and return flights individually. This meant that we could suddenly have great days out without being charged the same rate as a company employee on a biz trip.

So how do those of us that do this take advantage of this book?
Well there are 100+ different destinations offered by these flights, and by using this book you can easily see who flies to your chosen destination and when is usually the best time to book a flight for. That is a big bonus, as part of the fun is finding out who is the cheapest and you can not do it without knowing who is flying. Part of deciding where to visit involves knowing how much transport to the town from the airport will cost. This book tells you. How much is food and a small range of pockets are suited. If you want to stay the night, as usually the flights are the same price, you have a list of 2 or 3 places to stay. It covers around 100 airports in this fashion. It really is well worth buying as it is a passport to the day trip to euro land revolution.

Without doubt where this book really shines is in pointing out museums and sights to see. Lets be truthful, if your going to spend all that hard earned cash flying to euro land you really should save a few euro's by visiting these cheap treasures.

The book also includes a lot of essential info, such as police phone numbers, tourist info numbers and late night pharmacy info. It tells you where to find an internet cafe to email home, and what dialing codes to dial in and out.

My only gripe is the constant refers to various websites, some of which Katie Wood must know are not really good places to look. It makes me wonder if some money changed hands for website placement in the book. We who like our day trips and us cheap flight folk NEVER book through a third party website.

Something that I would like to see added, bearing in mind that a lot of folk buying this book do not have a clue, is the inclusion of Mid and Long Term airport parking charges. They are never as bad as a lot of folk make out, but it could make the difference between deciding where to fly out from.

I for one will buy it each year and I hope the info is updated to justify it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cleverly written and very helpful to today's traveller, 21 Jun 2003
By Freddy Pullar (Aberfeldy, Scotland) - See all my reviews
With holidays becoming increasingly accessible to all, this very helpful guide can be useful to both experienced and novice traveller. From little visited towns such as Limoges or Gdansk, to the touristic giants of Paris and Milan, and over seventy other cities, all the European weekend breaks you could want are here, at very affordable prices. Espescially helpful are the eating out and excursions sections, whether looking for the usual sights and activities, or something a bit off the beaten track.
The introduction is useful for the less experienced, telling one where the best breaks are for certain different people. Katie Wood is a very experienced travel writer, knowing what people want and expect in a short holiday.
This book is great for anyone looking for short leave from Britain and work. It is written with an aim for anyone and the reader is certain to find a break well worth their money, as is this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not really a guide to cheap destinations, 26 May 2004
By R. Manson - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book was a big disappointment. The cheaper airlines fly to the cheaper airports outside of the cities, sometimes fifty or so miles outside.
I had hoped that this book would cover places closer to these airports. It does not, it just tells you to take the hour-and-half-bus ride or pay for an expensive taxi. It mentions that Frankfurt Hahn airport is no where near Frankfurt; why not tell us about places closer to the airport then?
This book is just a travel guide to europe, with little detail. I would recommend you spend your money on a different guide, such as the Rough Guide to Europe.
