Product Description

Product Description

Hadrian's Wall Path National Trail opens in May 2003. It is a footpath of some 81 miles (130 km) linking Wallsend, near Newcastle-upon-Tyne, with Bowness-on-Solway on England's west coast. The Path shadows, for its greater part, the historic line of Hadrian's Wall; it is the only National Trail to lie within a World Heritage Site, and there are many opportunities to explore the fascinating history of four centuries of Roman rule. It is also a walk of dramatic contrasts, starting amid bustling, redeveloped Newcastle, where the Path passes Millennium Bridge and the new Baltic arts complex, and finishing on the lonely shores of the Solway Firth, with its unique wildlife. The book contains: the entire route split into convenient sections; 1:25,000 Ordnance Survey maps for each section, marked with points of special interest; circular routes off the trail for shorter works, enabling the walker to explore the local area; route information on each section, with colour photographs and notes on nearby features; background information on local history, wildlife, archaeology, geology, industry and land use; details of public transport, villages on or near the route with facilities for walkers, useful organisations and accommodation, including camping sites; and the Countryside Access Charter on your rights and responsibilities when out in the countryside.

5.0 out of 5 stars An easy to follow and informative guide book, 12 Jun 2003
By A Customer
As a professional tourist guide I have found Anthony Burton's book an excellent route guide for the newly opened National Trail. The guide divides the National Trail along Hadrians Wall (a World Heritage site since 1987)into 6 sections, each a long days walk of 12 to 15 miles and has several sections explaining the history, geology, industry and other facets of the region.. It uses OS 1:25000 maps to cover the whole route and is well illustrated with colour photographs.
An excellent guide which is easy to follow.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE definitive guide to walking the wall., 25 Feb 2008
There are other books on walking Hadrian's Wall, but for me this is easily the best in just about every area. Whilst I'll always be open to new publications, in 2008 this is the only guide you will need to walk the wall safely, and that will give you you accurate and precise historical information on the way.

It ticks all the boxes. From a practical view it is compact and won't fall apart at the sight of the first shower - of which you may encounter several. You can use it to walk the wall in sections or in one hit. It describes the route very accurately, and allows enough space for a good depth of historical information. Hard to beat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent maps and guide to the complete route, 1 Aug 2007
By Jezreel (London, UK) - See all my reviews
I have just got back from walking the wall. This book was excellent. The maps clearly showed the path, and the text described the route and turns to take. It also has plenty of information on the sites and items of interest on the path as well as plenty of information on Roman history, the forts and the parts of the wall you are passing (milecastles, watchtowers etc). I did not need any other maps, particularly as the route is also very well marked. It is also a nice compact size with a fairly rain resistant cover.
