Book Description
The Weekend Walks series, launched in 2000 with volumes covering the Yorkshire Dales and Dartmoor & Exmoor, is aimed at serious, dedicated walkers who find that other guides contain few walks that they would consider long enough to be worthwhile, and in other cases that the mapping is of an inadequate standard.
The 14 circular walks in each Weekend Walks volume are all between 10 and 15 miles (16-24 km) in length and the mapping is based on the Ordnance Survey 1:25 000 maps. The walks are grouped in pairs, both starting and finishing at a town or village large enough to offer accommodation and other facilities. Each book provides the basis for seven walking weekends (or 14 full days' walking) in some of Britain's prime walking territory.
The route of each walk is designed not only to guide the user through some of the finest scenery in the region, but also to include sites of archaeological, historical or literary interest. Each walk is illustrated with colour photographs specially commissioned for the series.
In The Peak District, the seven centres - Ilam, Longnor, Bakewell, Edale, Hathersage, Old Glossop and Marsden - have been chosen to give walkers the chance to explore to the full the entire area of the National Park with its high rolling moorland and deep rocky dales.
